What is SEO?

SEO is important, no matter what type of business you are running, but it is specifically important when it comes to SEO for lawyers. SEO, or search engine optimization, should not be forgotten or overlooked when you are running a business and marketing your services or products to a consumer base. SEO is the main way to get your website on the search engine’s results page—the better your SEO is, the better your result will be.

SEO helps you connect with the algorithms that big companies and search engines—such as Yahoo, Bing and Google—use and it helps to ensure you show up in their results. This process needs to be implemented in order for your visibility and online presence to actually grow, the stronger your SEO is, the higher ranked your website or business will appear in the search results.

But maybe you need SEO broken down a little more for you, and that’s okay, that’s why we’re here.

Because SEO is the practice of getting targeted traffic to your website from a search engine’s organic search results page, it means these rankings and visitors are organic, which is great. This is every visitor or view you earn for your website without using advertisements to do so.

The main benefit of getting a high rank for a specific keyword is that you will get what is called “free” traffic; traffic you are not advertising actively to receive.

But How Does It Work?

The first step to SEO is understanding how search engines work—we’ll use Google, since Google is a large and often preferred search engine. When you type in your search, or say, “What is SEO?”, you will see that the search engine gives you a number of results—in this case, 563,000,000 results in 69 seconds. Impressive, right?

On the first search results page, we see maybe 10 to 12 results that are actually worth looking at—there is no reason to click through to find other articles when what you need is right in front of you, after all. Google has filtered out your question to present you with the best results that answer that question; but just how does Google determine what is the best result to present?

Relevancy, or how relevant a website is to your query is the first thing Google’s algorithm uses to determine what to display to you. You don’t want to see websites that are advertising SEO services when you are searching to learn about SEO.

However, don’t think that Google simply puts the “most relevant pages at the top” because, as indicated above there are over 500,000,000 search results for the query. The search engines also look at authority—is this content accurate and trustworthy? When Google is looking to see if a page is trustworthy and accurate enough to be an authoritative page on the subject, they look at the number of other pages that link to that website—links from other pages are known as backlinks. The more links a page has, the higher it should rank.

After relevancy and authority, they look at usefulness. Is the content useful? If not, they do not want it at the top of the results. If the content on the website is extremely disorganized, despite having backlinks, and is full of information that the normal person with no degree could not understand, it may not make it to the first search results page.

Why is SEO Important for Law Firms?

But how does this translate into being important for law firms?

Well, nobody really looks past the first search result page when searching for a lawyer or a law firm. The first page results are often seen to be more credible, and trustworthy. And every law firm needs new clients to grow and survive—after all, some types of law firms deal in legal issues that you only really need a lawyer for once. Because of this, those particular firms really need more growth than others.

Some such firms or lawyers that may need to ensure their SEO is on point (while every lawyer should do this, it would be extremely important for these lawyers): trust fund lawyers, estate lawyers, adoption lawyers, are just to name a few types of firms that may receive a business that is not as commonly received as car accidents or wrongful deaths.

The National Law Review has reported that 96% of people use online search engines such as Google, when they’re looking for legal help. These people aren’t really searching for one particular lawyer, they are often trying to find the best local legal service that meets their needs. The National Law Review found that most of these searches are unbranded—that more or fewer means, you are not typing in the law firm or lawyer’s name in the search engine. Instead, you might be typing a query such as “Chicago personal injury lawyer”, or “New York wrongful death lawyer”.

There’s a handful of other statistics that have been gathered in regards to demonstrating the importance of SEO:

92% of searchers choose businesses that are on the first page of search results.

70-80% of search engine users ignore paid ads.

– SEO’s conversation rate is estimated to be 14.6%, compared to the 1.7% that is estimated of traditional advertising methods.

What Types of Results Can I Expect From SEO?

SEO is going to bring more traffic and attention to your law firm. This will translate to more phone calls, emails, and client referrals. Your competitors are going to be doing SEO, even if you are not. This puts you at a disadvantage. SEO is going to get your website more engagement, the bounce rate (which is the percentage of visitors to your site who leave after seeing just one page) should lower with the correct SEO implemented.

What to Look For in an SEO Company

Hiring an SEO company or agency can be scary. After all, you may not have the time and energy to do your own SEO. You may not understand as fully as you would need to get to the optimal results. So, before you hire just any SEO company, you should know what to expect from that company.

Your SEO agency needs to know how to run a keyword analysis. They need to understand that keywords are crucial, and that you have target customers that you want to reach. Your agency should be aware of what keywords your competitors are using, keywords that will give you the maximum ROI, how many keywords to target to help boost your revenues and profits. The agency should do a lot of research in your specific niche, so that they can determine whether short-tail or long-tail keywords are better for leads.

You should also expect your agency to perform a content audit. This is a significant part of the SEO strategy, and it helps to ensure that your website content is going to link perfectly with what the customer or consumer would expect of your site when it comes up during their queries.

A technical on-page audit, which is where the technical aspects of your website’s SEO is taken into account. Essentially, this is like a wellness check for your website to find out what needs to be fixed, and ensure the pages on your site are bot-friendly as search engine bots do crawl the site to index it.

A link audit is going to be the last type of audit you should expect from your company. They are going to help you look at your backlinks—because backlinks can make or break your SEO strategy. Oftentimes SEO companies will help write blog articles that can backlink to your website to help give your website credibility.

Your chosen company should also be sending you reports—and they should monitor your website. After all, they can’t do their job without knowing what’s working and what isn’t. SEO isn’t just “one thing fits all websites”, it has to be tailored.
